The Central PA Autism Community has officially launched registration and fundraising for the second Annual Central PA Autism Community Walk.

The walk will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020, at the Blair County Convention Center in Altoona. The doors will open at 11 a.m. for families and friends to enjoy all of the activities, learn more about local resources for families with autism and special needs, get lunch from a catered lunch menu, and check out local business vendor booths. The official kickoff of the walk will be at 2 p.m. with words from Lindsay Martsolf, president of the Central PA Autism Community, and special guests who will be attending the event.

The Central PA Autism Community has thrived over the past couple of years by offering free events to families with children of autism and special needs. The group offers on average two to three sensory activities a month for families to attend. The sensory environment allows children the opportunity to get out and explore their local communities and the opportunity for families to meet and create support systems. The Central PA Autism Community also uses its locally funded resources to partner and work with local businesses and establishments in the Central Pennsylvania area to create much-needed accommodations for children with Autism and special needs.

“Autism affects one in 59 individuals," President Martsolf said. "As a mother and a professional, it’s important for us to teach our children the abilities to become more independent and have the social skills to become more successful. Our monthly events encourage families not to be fearful of bringing their child into the community. We as a community are also educating those without disabilities on how to interact and appropriately engage with an individual with special needs. This walk is our biggest fundraiser of the year and really helps ensure we can continue to provide sensory events to our children with all developmental differences as well as awareness and acceptance to our community.”

Participants can walk, ride their adaptive strollers, volunteer, or donate to help support the Walk and local families. There are a variety of registration options in which individuals can create teams or those wishing to participate can also register as individuals, and not part of a team. There are a variety of registration options beginning at $10 per person (ages 11 and older) and up to $50 which includes the registration, a t-shirt, and a meal voucher.

For those who cannot be at the walk, there is still the option to donate (to a team or as an individual) or provide a basket that can be a part of the basket raffle on the day of the event. These options will support the mission to help our local children with Autism and Special Needs and their families. The goal of the Central PA Autism Community Walk this year is to raise more than $12,000 to support the children with the events necessary to get them in the community where they feel comfortable and their needs are met.
